Queen Square, Saint John, N.B., looking west in the aftermath of the Great Fire / [William Notman?] – 20 June 1877. – 1 photograph : b&w ; 11.5 x 10.5 cm. The fire began about 2:30 p.m. on 20 June when a spark ignited a bundle of hay in Henry Fairweather’s storehouse, located in the vicinity of what is now known as Market Square. Carried by a strong wind, the fire spread quickly and escalated into a major conflagration. When the smoke cleared, some nine hours later, the city was in ruins, with over 200 acres and 1,612 structures destroyed, including most public buildings. Nineteen people also perished as a direct result of the Great Fire of 1877. P86-51 Saint John stereographs, PANB.
